Hello, again, friends, and happy Monday (even though it’s almost over)!
You may have wondered where I have been for the past week.
The short answer: I took a social media break. No doodling. No Instagram. No blogging.
The long answer: Keep reading.
According to Newton’s First Law of Motion:
A body at rest will remain at rest unless an outside force acts on it, and a body in motion at a constant velocity will remain in motion in a straight line unless acted upon by an outside force.
I tend to burn the candle at both ends. I am Newton’s object in motion.
Last week, life made me stop and slow down. Then I stayed slowed down, and it has taken me a week to get up again.
Long story short, my son had surgery last week, and the rest of my life (beyond my kids) went on short-term hiatus. I won’t provide details (because it’s not my place to – one day when he is older, if he cares to share the details, he will). What is most important is that he is fine. I am so thankful.
I did not quite realize how depleted I was until I fell asleep on the couch at 8 p.m., after we brought him home and tucked him into bed. After my first full-night’s sleep in months, I woke up feeling worse and acutely aware of the fact that I have been pushing myself beyond my limits and needed to step back.
All of the stress of the past few months leading up to surgery day flowed out of me in a wave of exhaustion. Until today, I haven’t felt motivated to do anything other than be with my family and relax as much as possible. If you know me in real life, you know this is very unlike me – too much relaxation makes me twitch, literally.
I took a week off from social media, and it was the best thing I could have done for my mental and physical health. I’ve lost followers as a result. It’s all good. This is a hobby. And hobbies should be fun. If you have stuck around through my week-long hiatus, then I say: thanks.
My job as a mom is never done, and my family will always be my priority. Though I do try to prioritize myself when I can. Last week my body was screaming for me to just PAUSE. So I did. What a good decision.
And now I’m back, so you’ll have to put up with me again. The joke’s on you!
